TARKULHA DEVI

Tarkulha devi temple is situated 5 km from 'Chauri Chaura' and it is situated around the area full of TAAD (palm) trees hence the name of the deity is derived from this. There is a month long fair organized starting from the 'Chaitra Ramnavami'.People purchase their quota of spices of the year(garam masala) from the fair.Tarkulaha devi was also ishta devi( special deity for whom the worshipper is devoted) of the freedom fighter Bandhu Singh who used to fight Gurilla war with the Britishers.basically his character was like Robin hood but the Britishers as always used to call him as a dacoit. It is a folklore that Indian Robin hood Bandhu Singh use to worship the goddess by burning 50 Kg (seer according to the system popular at that time) of camphor. That practice is still continued and devotees burn camphor and incense sticks in front of the deity.A memoir is also built in the memory of Bandhu Singh.
There is a saying that he used to sacrifice heads of enemies in the Tarkulha Devi Temple. Finally he was arrested by British and hanged publicly at Ali Nagar Chauraha in Gorakhpur on 12th August 1857. People say that 7 times the hangman was unable to hang him due to rope breaking every time by grace of Tarkulha Devi. It was successful only at 8th time when Bandhu Singh prayed Mata Tarkulha Devi.(According to some he murmured that goddess didn't help him when it was needed and now playing the game then final rope didn't break.)
At present the devotees after worshipping the goddess cook meat in a earhen pot on fire of cow dung cake (goitha) and litti( a local delicacy made with wheat flour on open fire and seves as substitute of indian bread 'chapati').But few people are making the atmosphere bad by drinking alcohol. It should be banned in the premises by the local authority.C-MODEP is looking out the ways to solve it.

SALEMPUR

Salempur was under Gupta and Pal dynasty.Due to thick forest alarond it was never invaded by Muslim rulers. In Mugal period there representative Salim Khan was here which was the source of its name. It was under Majauliraj. One of the king of Majhauliraj acceptedd Islam as religion so the queen became angry and made her residence across the Bhat(a type of land) thus the name Bhatparani came into picture. Dirgheshwernath is a lord Shiva's temple and made by Aswathama when he had donated his MANI to Arjuna and left for Devaranya(forest of God and present day Deoria district. Sahiyagarh is also nearby place where many idols of Gupta or Pal dynasty are lying under the sun unattended. Shonitpur is present day Sohanpur which was capital of Banasur.C-MODEP is trying to give its glory back.

Banasur Capital Kotha village

It is said that capital of Banasur Sonitpur is the present Sonitpur distric of Assam..It is also said that it is near Lohaghat of Champawat in Kumaon. The ancient Multan city of Punjab is known by different names, but one of its oldest name according to Cunningham, was Kashyappur .It was founded by Kashyapa. After Kashyapa, his eldest son, Daitya Hiran Kashyapa born from Diti, succeeded him. After him his son Prahlad and later his son Banasura, became the heir of the Kingdom of Kashyapa. At the same time Krishna killed Banasura and later Krishna's son Samba became the king of Kashyapapur. Some says it to be near Tamilnadu.
But what we are listening from our childhood that Shonitpur is present day Sohanpur of Deoria distric in Uttar Pradesh. In the area there is a pyramid of soil which is supposd to be the remains of fort of Banasur in the village of Kotha. It is a folklore that pieces of gold has been recovered from the water flowing through the pyramid which is always unidirectional..There is a barren land which is said to be place of war between lord Krishna and Banasur.Sohagra temple of Lord Shiva is probably biggest Shivlinga ever made and it iwas the place where Banasur use to worshipped Lord Shiva. Due to poor and backward area these things never attracted any organizationor Govt body.C-MODEP is trying hard to give it's glory back.

SOHNAG BUDDHIST MONASTRY

Vincent A Smith has described in detail about the buddhist monastery in Sohnag in his article published in "The Journal of Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland 'in July '1900. He has described that many tablets and idols found there was taken away by the then commissioner of Gorakhpur. Still the mounds are there but nobody from the government is taking any notice.
Monastery (plural: monasteries) denotes the building, or complex of buildings, that houses a room reserved for prayer (e.g. an oratory) as well as the domestic quarters and workplace(s) of monastics, whether monks or nuns, and whether living in community or alone (hermits).

Monasteries may vary greatly in size – a small dwelling accommodating only a hermit, or in the case of communities anything from a single building housing only one senior and two or three junior monks or nuns, to vast complexes and estates housing tens or hundreds. A monastery complex typically comprises a number of buildings which include a church, dormitory, cloister, refectory, library, balneary and infirmary. Depending on the location, the monastic order and the occupation of its inhabitants, the complex may also include a wide range of buildings that facilitate self-sufficiency and service to the community

Buddhist monasteries are generally called vihara (Pali language). Viharas may be occupied by males or females, and in keeping with common English usage, a vihara populated by females may often be called a nunnery or a convent. However, vihara can also refer to a temple. In Tibetan Buddhism, monasteries are often called gompa. In Thailand, Laos and Cambodia, a monastery is called a wat.
